Definición:

Es la cicatrización o engrosamiento de los pulmones sin una causa conocida.

Causas, incidencia y factores de riesgo:

Nadie sabe qué causa la fibrosis pulmonar o por qué razón algunas personas la contraen. Esta enfermedad hace que los pulmones se cicatricen y se tornen rígidos. Esta rigidez hace que cada vez sea más difícil respirar. En algunas personas, la enfermedad empeora rápidamente (en cuestión de meses a unos cuantos años), pero otras personas experimentan poco empeoramiento de la enfermedad con el paso del tiempo.

Se cree que esta afección es el resultado de una respuesta inflamatoria a una sustancia desconocida. "Idiopática" significa que no se puede encontrar ninguna causa. La enfermedad se presenta con más frecuencia en personas entre 50 y 70 años de edad.
