Mesotelioma maligno

Definición:

Es un tumor canceroso de la pleura (revestimiento del pulmón y de la cavidad torácica) o del peritoneo (revestimiento del abdomen), cuya causa es casi siempre la exposición constante a los asbestos.

Causas, incidencia y factores de riesgo:

Un mesotelioma maligno afecta con más frecuencia a los hombres que a las mujeres. La exposición constante a los asbestos es el mayor factor de riesgo. Los síntomas pueden aparecer hasta 20 a 50 años o incluso más después de la exposición a los asbestos. La edad promedio para el diagnóstico es los 60 años.

El tumor se puede propagar rápidamente hasta comprometer otras áreas cercanas.
