Deficiencia de AAT

Definición:

Es la falta de una proteína en el hígado que bloquea los efectos destructores de ciertas enzimas. Esta afección puede llevar a que se presente enfisema y enfermedad hepática y, en raras ocasiones, enfermedad de la piel.

Causas, incidencia y factores de riesgo:

La deficiencia de alfa-1- antitripsina es el resultado de un defecto genético. Se desconoce el mecanismo que provoca la enfermedad hepática y el enfisema asociados en algunas personas con esta deficiencia, aunque algunas evidencias sugieren que puede estar relacionado con la inflamación.

Los estudios ahora muestran que esta deficiencia puede ser más común de lo que alguna vez se pensó. Aproximadamente un 75% de los adultos con deficiencia grave desarrollarán enfisema que, generalmente, comenzará antes de los 40 años de edad. El tabaquismo puede aumentar el riesgo.
